Shane Jeffrey

is an Australian based dietitian and founder of FMB Wellbeing – a specialist private practice in Brisbane, Australia – for eating disorders, weight concerns, and the non diet approach.

Shane graduated from dietetics in 1993, after which my first role was as a generalist dietitian in a local hospital. It was here, in 1994 that I saw my first eating disorder patient – and I knew there and then, I had found my place in the dietetics world.  Since that time, I have worked almost exclusively in the field of eating disorders and the non-diet approach – holding posts across the private and public systems in Australia and the UK.

With a practice style strongly supportive of the person centered approach, my richest and most rewarding learnings have been at the hands of those I have the pleasure to work with in their recovery journey.  It is for this reason that I often find myself struggling with manualised eating disorder treatments such as CBT-e and Maudsley FBT. While I am trained in delivering these therapies, most of my treatment is provided as a member of a multi-disciplinary team adopting a general psychotherapy approach, whereby the patient and their loved ones are considered valuable members of the treating team.

I relish the opportunity to teach, and provide lectures across 5 universities on the topic of eating disorders, counseling skills, and refeeding syndrome to dietetic students.  I also chair the Dietitians Association of Australia’s interest group for Health, Behaviour and Weight Management, and see this as being a space to advocate for the non-diet approach and contribute to the prevention of eating disorders.

My current interests lie in the areas of eating disorders (and the prevention of) in the fitness industry, refeeding syndrome in adults with an eating disorder, and counseling skills for supporting behavior and cognitive change around eating.  With a working philosophy to help people develop positive relationships with food, mind, body and self, my motto is to bring eating back to the basics and support people to look after themselves the way they would look after another.
